I wanted to congratulate Derek Comingore on being named an MVP. He's a regular blogger here on SQLTeam.com on Business Intelligence topics. It's great to see community participation acknowledged by Microsoft.

What a night! Mario Chalmers hits a last second three to send the game into overtime and KU rolls from there. Twenty years ago when KU won their last national championship I was at KU. I just had to head down to Lawrence and enjoy the party again. These pictures are from downtown Lawrence. They had 5-6 blocks cordoned off and it was wall to wall people. What a fantastic night!

That's me in front with a buddy from high school and his son. And various crowd shots. There were so many people. Just amazing!

Not sure what category this should belong in. I accidently used the scroll wheel while I had the control key pressed. It turns out that resizes the font. I haven't tried it in everything yet but it works in FireFox AND Outlook. It's quick and convenient.

A DELL Rant

It's not often I post rants. I don't like to read them. But DELL just chapped my hide! I get to the MVP Summit in Seattle to find that my ethernet port won't connect to the hotel. No link light. Nigel Rivett is kind enough to try his laptop in my room and it worked fine. I haven't installed anything new on my laptop. It worked fine the morning I left. After all the diagnostics failed to turn up anything Dell's first solution was to do a rollback. Amazingly enough that didn't fix it.

There next suggestion was to scrub the machine back to nothing and reinstall the operating system. Oh and they said they don't support two partitions on a machine. If ... after I'd deleted all my data and configurations ... there was still a problem ... then ... it may (MAY!) be a hardware problem. Come on! I've got two operating systems on this computer -- both of them production builds -- and neither of them can see the network card. And they both stopped being able to see it at the exact same time. It's not software. Fix my damn machine. Guess I'll have to try an IBM next time. Fortunately I was able to buy a cheap USB network card just down the street.

Maybe Dell should setup a separate division for people that have a clue about computers. I'd certainly pay a little extra to have someone believe me when I say that I already rebooted. And you're from Dell and you read this I'll be happy to take this post down if you fix my computer :) I can easily be bought.

Updated...

I finally updated to the latest build of .TEXT. The two main new features are:

Posts that don't appear on the main aggregated page. If you'd like to post on topics not related to software development you can prevent those from appearing on the home page. At the bottom of the page to enter a post, click the down arrow in the Advanced Options bar and clear the Include in Aggregated Site checkbox.

Custom URLs. You can also give your post a custom URL. In the same Advanced Options section, you can enter a value into the EntryName. The URL looks something like http://weblogs.sqlteam.com/billg/archive/2004/01/25/update.aspx when I type “update“ into the EntryName box.

That's really it. There are small enhancements here and there but nothing else really major.

UPDATE: Also note the main page is now cached for 120 seconds so any post you make or feedback you get might not show up for two minutes.

I found out last week that I'd been named an MVP for SQL Server. Which I think is pretty darn cool! I don't know if anyone else on the site was added to the list but hopefully I'll track that down. Thanks Steve and Rob. And who ever else helped :)

I've got a new poll up on SQLTeam.com and I'd appreciate it if you'd take a second and vote. This is probably the first really serious poll I've run. I'd really like to know what language you spend most of your day using. Getting a lot of votes and a clear idea of what languages are popular will help me make the most of my relationship with Microsoft. And help me get better content.
