SQL Server 3rd Party Tools
Which SQL Sever 3rd Party tools do you use?
We've been using Red Gate's SQL Compare and SQL Data Compare for a few years now. I rarely use the data compare tool though, but not because it's not a great tool. We also use Quest's SQL LiteSpeed product. It reduced our backup files and backup times by 75%! The disk savings on our SAN was huge.
We are considering purchasing a few Idera products. I've recommended their SQLschedule product to a group here that manages over 250 jobs across 2 database servers.
If you aren't using any 3rd Party tools, is it because there is no budget for it or you don't know what's out there? Things to consider when deciding on which tool to purchase or at least demo are price, licensing scheme, disk savings in the case of backup tools, and man hour savings.

re: SQL Server 3rd Party Tools Did you take a look at SqlSentry for scheduling? I am not the kind of DBA that ever has to deal with job scheduling issues, so I don't really know what to look for in products, but SqlSentry seems like an amazing tool... |

re: SQL Server 3rd Party Tools I don't have to deal with job scheduling issues either, so I didn't try out either product. Idera came here to demo their suite of products, so I just informed another team here about their scheduling product since I knew that they support a couple hundred jobs. |

re: SQL Server 3rd Party Tools In our shop we don't let a tool generate an overall synch script - we have to maintain a seperate script (complete with a check and drop header) for each database object. So Red-gate is a great tool - but its too expensive - and we don't need the synch script capability. We do need to see the differences between databases though - and we've been using SQL Effects Clarity in order to do that. In fact - we included it in our build process and it updates a web site for us. We use the standard version - which is cheap (less than $150 if I remember) - but there is a free version. Another even cheaper tool is Kentico - though I like the Clarity tool better. They have a great UI for drilling into the differences. Another |
