DBA job ranked #7 for Best Job in America 2010
I started my IT career as a student worker in the database team at the County of San Diego. Although I worked on many different things in that group, it launched my career as a Database Administrator. You can get an overview of my career here.
It seems I picked the right career for a good job in America. According to CNNMoney and PayScale, a database administrator job is ranked number 7 for the best job in America in 2010. Check it out here.

re: DBA job ranked #7 for Best Job in America 2010 I'm a DBA (in San Diego) and I love my job. I do see people burn out on it. Usually it's because they really don't enjoy the constant learning and studying. Sometimes it's because they resent the intrusion on their private time. I love it because of my ADD (undiagnosed and allegedly.) I get to write software, play with hardware, work with business analytics, tune queries, design reports, write scripts, play with encryption, etc. Plus, every once in a long while, I get pure adrenaline from recovering a failed server. |

re: DBA job ranked #7 for Best Job in America 2010 Hi there, I'm new to the site and I found this post to be inspiring and motivating. You see, I recently applied for a student worker position (reporting services) with the San Diego County and there's a good chance that I'll be hired. However, I am unsure as to what to expect in regards to the technical difficulty of the position. Should I start reading books on Reporting Services or sharpen my SQL knowledge? Or will that be something I learn on the job? I have academic experience with writing SQL statements, working ORACLE, and PHP and MySQL. Anyways, I look forward to reading more of your upcoming posts. |

re: DBA job ranked #7 for Best Job in America 2010 Newbie, the IT department at CoSD was outsourced back in 1999. A few departments kept their IT staff though, so maybe you applied for a position in one of those. Is the position at the District Attorney's Office by chance? If so, the DBA manager there is my former boss. And the lead SQL DBA is one of my friends. Let me know and I can find out what skillset you'll need. And if it is for the DA's office, personality goes a long way with them. I had close to zero experience when I was hired. I was a personality fit, and they knew I could be trained. Nevertheless, it is reassuring to hear that I might not need to have an overwhelming amount of knowledge...They also did say that they provide training.
