Windows XP x64

A few rants, as you'd probably expect.

I got a new computer yesterday, a nice spiffy Shuttle XPC for an Athlon64. I also acquired Windows XP x64 to try it out. Now, the applications that I use on my PC are pretty limited (World of Warcraft, Mozilla Firefox, Halflife 2, etc) and all 32-bit for now, but hey, I want this PC to not suck for awhile, so I bought some nice stuff. I got 2 GB of RAM, and I had 2 10K RPM Raptor Seral ATA (SATA) drives. I've had the drives in my old machine for a bit, and was using RAID 1 for speed, but wasn't using them to boot.

Here was the problem. I enabled RAID on the new machine and couldn't get XP x64 to install. It would reboot back to the CD, like it wasn't making the hard drive bootable. A small amount of research showed that I had to use drivers and press F6 while booting Windows Setup. No problem. Then it asked for a floppy to be inserted.

Problem.

OK, what year is this? 2005? I haven't used a floppy in 3 years. It took me a half hour of going through my junk box to find a floppy drive and a cable. Then I had to find a floppy that worked (formatted about 3 that I had in a desk drawer before I found one that would format clean). By the way, if you haven't used a floppy disk in a while, let me remind you of something: They are VERY VERY VERY SLOW. Like "I could enter all the driver files in MORSE CODE faster than this" slow. With a straight key! It took 30 seconds to save a file. A file written with Notepad that weighed in at a hefty 8 KB.

So, find a floppy, plugging it in, getting the drivers installed….oh wait, the drivers won't install. Seems that despite being marked as 64 bit drivers, these aren't CERTIFIED 64 bit drivers, so they can't be used during installation. Grrrrrrrrrr. I was cursing so loud my dog was hiding from me.

So, clear all the RAID, I'll just reinstall the box later when nVidia finally gets the rest of the drivers together. Of course, I'll probably have to find another floppy drive by then, but hey. Oh, and a question for the commentors: Will the Windows Setup program be able to recognize a USB floppy drive? Or do I have to crack the case and cobble something together?

So I get XP x64 installed and it works fine. I install the driver suite from nVidia (the motherboard is an nForce 3 chipset) and it works great. I install the new and improved drivers for my video card (ATI Radeon 9800 Pro) and they work famously. So, no issues so far. I install the drivers for my Belkin Nostromo Gamepad…

Oh, a quick word about that. If you play video games on a PC, specifically first person shooters or MMORPG's, and you don't have a gamepad, then stop reading now, go to your local dealer and BUY ONE. Except for the issue I'm about to describe, this is the best thing to happen to PC Video games since hardware 3D acceleration. This product is awesome. It's a 15-button keypad, directional pad, jump button and "red button" all in one fully programmable unit. You get nifty programming software that easily lets you bind any key on the gamepad to any keyboard key. So your keyboard still works as you'd expect, but you've got an extra keyboard that's very comfy to use and gets you quick access to lots of buttons.

Finally, I installed the drivers for the Nostromo and no dice. The OS needs 64-bit drivers from Belkin before it's gonna work. So, that sucks. I really can't game without the pad anymore, believe me, I tried playing WoW without it and just found new and insteresting ways to frustrate myself with not having access to everything I need. So I'm installing Windows XP, boring edition on my PC right now. Bah.

Hopefully belkin will fix their stuff soon too. So if you're using a gamepad and rely on it like I do, stay away from XP x64. If you're using XP x64, don't buy a Belkin. If you work for Belkin and you're reading this, drop me a comment or an email and let's talk about beta testing your driver.

Anyway, other than that, the box is great. I was playing last night and it was very very very fast loading, zoning, and so on.

You're absolutely right about the gamepad! I've had one for about 2 years and once you get used to it, you cannot live without it!

No comment about the floppy part except I've heard the same complaint from a number of other people. Don't worry, the Atlanta Microsoft people got an earful about it.

re: Windows XP x64
Interesting gamepad. Can you program the gamepad to do a sequence of manuevers? There's one that's killing me right now in UT2K4 where you have to dodge off of walls to kind of fly through the air, and to dodge, you have to double hit one of the keys. It'd be darn nice if I could use something like the gamepad to do it for me.

I still haven't heard a single good thing from anyone installing 64 bit Windows, so it'll be a long while before I go anywhere near it.

CSV Reader:

Yup. It's got a full macro recorder and you can put in timer events between keypresses. Macros look like:

TAB key down
.25 seconds
TAB key up

Pretty spiffy.

re: Windows XP x64
Well, the solution to the nostromo issue was to dual boot with Windows XP 32-bit edition. Performance is great. I will reinstall everything when the drivers come out I guess.

The funny thing is that the Nostromo has drivers for Max OS X. So the Mac has better driver support than Microsoft's latest operating system. When's the last time that's been true? Probably right around the last time I used a floppy drive regularly.

Just an FYI... I discovered that I could throw the SATA drivers for my Asus A8V Deluxe system on my USB key and WinXP 64-Pro would find the drivers just fine, without even prompting me for a location.

I'm also in love with my Nostromo... time to send Belkin a note to ask about drivers ;-)

re: Windows XP x64
I am finding out to much about Win XP x64. I built a new system using a ASUS AV8 Deluxe. Got a copy of Win XP 64 to use on the new box. After finding out that there are many, many things that just don't have drivers for Win XP 64, I went and bought a OEM copy of Win XP 32. It turns out that Win XP 64 is base on the code base of Win Server 2003! Looks like a lot of companies are NOT going to do drivers for XP 64, but wait for the next generation of windows to come out. Mean while I have made my system a triple boot system with Win XP 32, Win XP 64, and Suse Linux 9.2. Everything works with 64 bit Linux, even the 32 bit apps!M$ did it to me again! But now I get to build about 35 matching systems for the boss Lady - They will all be running Linux and Star Office.

re: Windows XP x64
I guess the comparability issue of windows xp 64 bit is the main reason why microsoft has a trial version for it. I don't see why other windows or even the new windows vista having a open trail for all of us.

Suse linux 9.2 is a 64 bit application, but the main key point is here. It is a Linux operating system, not Windows. It has muliple environment capability plus anyone who knows C Programming can modify it or even creates their own driver to suit this system. Wass more, have u even experience restarting after installing some applications in Windows? In Linux i don't you'll need to restart like the way you do in windows.

Hmm...the cost of linux is also cheaper...

However, i am so use to using windows already plus looking at the image of the new windows vista, there is a urge for me to buy the product soon.

I heard that there is a 128 bit beta version of linux in the market. I don't seem to remember which company developed it.

re: Windows XP x64
Yes, but...

1) there's no linux driver for the gamepad
2) there's no linux version of world of warcraft.

The OS has to be able to support my hardware and software. Linux isn't the right answer for either of those qualifications.

(Yes, I can probably run WoW on Wine. After I spend a week downloading and configuring Wine, or spend the money to buy the codeweaver's version, and then my Nostromo probably still wouldn't work).

re: Windows XP x64
I have found my Windows XP Professional x64 Corporate edition to be a disaster.

4 out of 5 times it hangs on login prompt - doesn't even display the text properly, or screen just blacks out. Need to restart and sometimes, after checking hdd for errors, it actually boots up.

Everytime I install anything, it'll crash on reboot (same as mentioned previously).

When buying the system, I took an Asus' nVidia GeForce 5200/128 MB AGP 8x VGA card. There's no official driver released, so I installed beta from Asus site. Well, most of things requiring DirectX or OpenGL that work fine on XP do not work, such as for example Google Earth. Initialization error.

The mainboard is a crap Asus K8V-X (this is my work computer and don't really need it for anything so spare me comments about why on earth I'd buy such a pile of rubbish), which can't even install XP without F6 and specifying a driver on floppy disk. Same as above, I had no floppy discs or drives, so had to go right back to the shop and buy a drive and a box of floppy discs. For info - the driver that comes with A7V-880 and K8V-X doesn't work - get update from viaarena.com.

Now here's my biggest concerns:
- Windows x64 is very slow compared to XP. It hangs for 2-3 seconds, sometimes even up to 10 seconds (IE) to start a program. I had this problem even to worse degree on beta version of x64, but am very disappointed to see it in production version.

- Windows x64 doesn't even support installation of Intellimouse software, rendering Microsoft Wireless Intellimouse Explorer 2.0 useless... well not completely - despite not being able to see signal strength, battery level or use the side buttons and 3D wheel, the 2 buttons and up/down wheel still work. Pathetic, given colleague's Logitech works flawlessly.

- The emulation mode doesn't work. You can click on any program icon with right button and select emulation mode in properties, from Windows 98 (perhaps even 95) up to XP. Applications that work without issues on all systems up to XP (and some even with 2003) do NOT work on x64 regardless of what you set emulation to.

- None of the antivirus software works. Some even refuse to install, others have minor to major problems later.

- Firewall sucks. It even blocks its own programs by default. And even when set not to, it still does.

- It loves 32 bit applications even when 64 bit applications are there. Even I set IE 64 bit as default browser, open manually IE64 and click on a link in it as Open in new window - it'll open it in IE32... What the.....?

- Nero 6.x couldn't install, telling me it was incompatible. OK, bought Nero 7 - installs OK, and destroys every CD and DVD recorded. Nice.

Apart from the freezing - some applications would freeze up to a minute when clicking on their windows before recovering (or not), and constant disconnections of Yahoo Messenger, MSN Messenger, ICQ and even Skype (which didn't in XP on 32 bit machine I used earlier on the same internet link - and 4 mbps is sort of enough to run a messenger), major lack of support for drivers and running 32 bit applications, and crashes on startup, this Windows is pretty stable.

I'd warn anyone thinking of buying it to better put the money back in the pocket as there's absolutely nothing they'd profit from installing it, most likely they'll lose patience and put XP back on.

The 2 computers x64 was installed on:
BETA:
Asus A8N-SLi Deluxe, Athlon64 3200+, 1 GB Kingston DDR SD-RAM PC3200, 2xSeagate Barracuda SATA 200 GB, Pioneer DVR-A09 in a GView case with 420W power supply.

Production version:
Asus K8V-X, Sempron64 3600+, 512 MB Kingston DDR SD-RAM PC3200, Seagate Barracuda SATA 80+200 GB, Pioneer DVR-A09 in a GView case with 420W power supply.

I am afraid to date I have had a near 100% failure to get any 32 bit program to work as well as it did on mu old 3200 Athlon running standard XP pro.
Rome Total War crashes back to the desktop with monotonous regularity a few minutes into the game. GTA San Andreas runs too fast (stange because RTW runs slow and jerky while it does run). When it gets to the dating part of the game, the girl enters the circle, is instantly bored and walks back inside.
There are apparently no drivers for any sort of digital camera thought there are rumours that creative have one in beta. So I MAY be able to through away my brand new USB webcam and buy another one in a few weeks. Would be really nice if the wirelaess lan worked, but there are no drivers for that either of course. Parts of NERO dont work. Same is true for almost every program I previously used on the old machine.
I am now SO deperate I am installing Linux in dual boot to see if I can get my WINDOWS games working with wine/cedega as they appear to be unplayable on WINDOWS XP 64.

re: Windows XP x64
Installed Windows x64 on Monday after the nice people at Microsoft sent it to me as part of my partner pack. Put it on a custom built Athlon 64 machine and after a few issues with graphics card and network controller, web search found updates on manufacturers site,it's all working really well.

There's a definite marked increase in performance and I've yet to encounter any stability issues at all, which is a change from the usual Microsoft offerings.

Installed all my usual office software, the new version of Nero and some games again without problems. So, so far I can't complain about this version of Windows as I've got better performance with the same stability as XP pro.

Not wanting to upset anyone but for those who are having problems, have you downloaded the MS updates and are your machines really man enough to run this OS and have you set it up correctly?

re: Windows XP x64
Well I'm pretty pissed of with my new computer, which is an AMD 4200+ Dual Core, 250GB Maxtor, 2 sticks of 1GB Kingston DDR SD-RAM with Windows 64-Bit professional installed and an Nvidia NForce 7800GTX.

From the get-go there were problems. The very first time I loaded it up it just stuck on the Windows screen and didn't boot up. A restart and it worked, but after various installations, reinstalls and boot failures it seemed as if it was working.

Now, however, Rome Total War will start but freeze either immediately or a few minutes in, with only sound playing and the mouse and keyboard totally unresponsive. I don't know if this is an issue with the 64-Bit Windows or hardware errors, but I'm pretty pissed off and am considering reverting to Windows XP to see if that solves the problem.

When I got my ADM64 machine I put Debian AMD64 on it and the RC2 beta of WinXP x64.

Normally I spend about 95% of my time in Linux (I'm a sysadmin) so I didn't mind that there were almost no 64bit drivers for Windows... all my stuff worked just fine under Linux. Now that WinXP x64 has been officially released I am really surprised that there are still so few drivers for it. Forget printing anything, scanning anything, using funky controllers, etc. It's like running linux used to be in the late 90's when there were no drivers. Someone switched the tables around and now it seems Linux has all the 64bit drivers and Windows has almost none.

When my RC2 beta release expires in a few months I think I'll reclaim the partition for linux. The only thing I use Windows for is gaming, which I rarely have time for.

I'm running an Asus A8V Deluxe, AMD64 3000+, 512 megs, WD Caviar SATA HD. I'm having the same problems as Tomazz. Programs take 2-3 seconds to respond if I haven't used them for a while (ie they have been swapped out). I also find the machine doesn't respond for at least 30 seconds if I leave it alone for half an hour and come back to it. It has to be performance problems with the SATA drivers..argh.

I can't print with my HP LaserJet 1012.

I have a Logitech Internet Navigator keyboard, but no Logitech drivers either, so none of the special keys I paid extra for work.

Visual Studio .NET 2003 was a PAIN to install, especially when trying to get ASP.NET to work with IIS.

But, other than that :-) ... everything works.

I have Avast anti-virus installed and working.

Nero 6.3 works without a problem for me.

OpenOffice 2.0 works fine so does Firefox (including all standard plugins, Flash, Java, Acrobat).

Thinking of going back to Windows XP Pro. Maybe I can actually use my machine at a half decent speed.

Every time i click on 'start normally' (or words to that effect) it restarts again. I'm getting really pissed off!!. I'm guessing it must be something to do with the SATA incompatability, as m$ couldn't be bothered to include SATA drivers with x64, and the downloaded driver i have seems unstable.

Got the trial version of windows 64 bit running on a AMD 3400+. So far everything is running quite well, but HL2, FarCry and Serious Sam2 are too fast now. Even with the 64bit-patch on FC it ran so fast, that hitting an enemy was pure luck and HL2 with max.AA, max.AF, max. detail, etc. had the same problem. Having installed Lost Coast now, I thought they solved this issue, but the second time I ran it, the speed issue occured again. Other games like Dawn of War, UT2004 or F.E.A.R. ran without problems.

with the trial edition from microsoft, besides the floppy problem, what problems am i gonna run into with a software raid? ill prolly upgrade HDs for xmas.

with a dual boot system, is it booting both os versions at the same time? long boot times? you run from the 64 desktop, but it takes resources from 32bit when needed? sorry, dont know much about it, will have to look into it. what does one need to do to get this working? is this a viable option that solves current issues? also, for 32bit software that can be run in 64bit(i.e. hl2), will it actually be running in 32 and not gaining the benefits of 64bit?

crack suggestion: instead of cracking it (cracks will be worthless, b/c future windows will all have ability to validate os version for updates; unless u want to update your comp with cracked updates for the rest of time :p), you could just get your system runninng and setup how you want it, then create an image of it (symantac Ghost), and just re-install from image every 120days (length of free trial). just have to backup all your files. this a realilistic option? can you get the updates from microsoft with the trial version?

thanks for any help and suggestions.

It doe complain about an error evertime it starts guess the hardware ID doesn't match the driver being used..but it does work.

OK, first, got to agree with Brett on one thing: if you want the software go buy it. Pirating software is illegal. And how smart is it to post on pro-Microsoft board, which is watched by lots of folks who work for Microsoft about wanting a crack for some of their software? Buncha clueless n00bs.

Second, Microsoft typically puts out a huge PR push to hardware manufacturers to get drivers and support software written for their new operating systems. Most of the advance feature stuff we get in the press comes from these pushes to hardware developers. It's all part of making sure the operating system sells, because if drivers don't work, the OS won't sell.

There was no PR push to anyone about anything related to Windows XP x64. Nada. Zip. Zilch. Why? The conspiracy theorist in me says Microsoft is leery of getting burned by this architecture like they were about the ia64 (aka Itanic) architecture. Can't say as I blame them, but Linux has better driver support for x64 architecture than Microsoft does at this point.

The computer I have x64 on is my gaming machine. I don't want to tinker with it. I want to sit down and play games. However, my gaming stuff doesn't work with Windows XP x64, and I can't use the hardware RAID with it either. Essentially, x64 offers me no advantages whatsoever.

Hello,

I have a Asus A8V Deluxe with a AMD 64bit 3500+ and with a 200GB Sata Drive. Now I'm trying to install windows Xp64. But it aint a picnic.

I don't have a diskette drive.. so how can I get my sata to work? How come they didn't include the more popular sata drivers in windows xp64? ... djeez

Somebody here mentioned it works with a usb key aswell.. well this is not the case. Even though it recognises my usb key (It shows up in the select drive for installation, menu). But it doesn't take its drivers..

This just suxxxx sooo bad.

Not sure about all the ranting and raving about XP x64. Yes, it was a pain in the beta versions with drivers but the web community jumped in with decorated INF files and/or instrucions as to how to decorate them. Now, with some exceptions, there are drivers everywhere either by the manufacturers or compiled by that know how and they work well. As for the floppy issue, get over it. I may be mistaken but I believe that you can also burn the F6 drivers to a CD and not have to worry about the legacy floppy. For Nero, I use ver 6.3.1.17 and burn CDRs and DVDs without any problems. And as for the crack, get a life. Integrity is something that that isn't free anymore than software is free. Try to have some integrity and buy the OS. You get to try it out for 120 days without cost and if it is that big of an issue, do as suggested and image the drive and reinstall every 120 days. If you are having problems with a program, take a look at some communities such as Planet AMD64. There are over 49,000 members there and 156,000 posts. With a little searching and participation you can probably find an answer to your problem.

Well, I got a spiffy new OEM version of X64 Pro running on some hot new hardware I got which includes an Athlon 64 4400+ Dual Core. It's also on a gaming machine and hardware support has been tricky at best.

I started with a ZBoard, and quickly found it didn't work beyond a normal keyboard. Thankfully, only 3 days later, newly released X64 drivers appeared on the Web, and all was happy.

I decided to get a new mouse, and got a Razer Copperhead 2000dpi gaming mouse. An amazing device, but once again, saw it didn't behave beyond a normal everyday mouse. After an email to Razer about it, I was quickly put on a X64 beta test mailing and, lo and behold, a few days later, brand spiffy new beta X64 drivers were mailed to me. Still not entirely complete, (lack the FlashBIOS upload driver) they are now on their site. Another dedicated gaming company, dedicated to extreme gamers with extreme hardware and software.

The G15 came out and I was looking for a replacement for my ZBoard. I picked one up. The same day, I picked up a Nostromo n52 SpeedPad. Both, like all my other hardware, extreme gaming devices. The Logitech G15 worked out of the box. The software and LCD driver already written for X64.

The Nostromo on the other hand... well, I'm still waiting (which is why I found this board). Belkin has a great product. I hope they figure out their market is "extreme gamers with extreme hardware and software" which includes most definately "Windows XP X64". I haven't taken the pad back yet. It's really nice hardware and I'd love to use it with my World of Warcraft, Quake 4, and Civ 4. But if drivers don't come soon, it's going to become an open-box impromptu Christmas present to one of my friends; and I doubt I'll ever buy from Belkin again.

re: Windows XP x64
Wow. 512 MB of RAM and Shared Video. It should work. maybe. At least long enough to get into the video settings and turn everything (and I mean everything) off.

First thing to do though is make sure you've got the latest DirectX components and drivers installed. Those should be available from asus in your case, since you're using onboard video.

I know it's not an athlon64 issue, because I'm sitting here using one, waiting in queue on Alleria (17th in line, 2 minutes, bah). I had WoW working back when I was trying to get XP x64 to work but I reinstalled without XP x64 because of the controller issues mentioned above.

I'd take this to the worldofwarcraft.com tech support forums, if it still doesn't work after updating drivers.

Please post back with some results.

re: Windows XP x64
Well I find it amazing people have this many problems. I have an athlon x64 3200+ venice core, slapped a venus 12 cooler on it because I plan on massive overclocking and cant really afford fluid cooling, 4 512 chips of corsair DDR400, a seagate barracuda 160 GB sata drive, a sony 16x dvd burner, a 120 GB maxtor ATA-133 drive from an old machine, and a nice new radeon X1800 XL 256 on an nForce 4 ultra chipset board, powered with a 500 watt eATX PSU.

I had no problems installing windows xp pro x64, dual booting with a gentoo installation. I had no problems with drivers in windows, got nVidia drivers and catalyst 5.13. then I updated using windows update in case there was something important for once (there never is). OS comes with directx 9.0c, so I moved on to games - steam running HL2 CS:S and DoD:S no problems. FFXI, which has no problems, and some older games I play just out of addiction (morrowind, jedi knight: jedi academy, diablo II). I also model for CS:S and installed 3ds Max 8, which has yet to have a hitch on the new system. The only problem Ive had is finding burning software that works, I have to go to linux to burn cd's or dvd's. bottom line I have yet to run into a probelm and I am supremly satisfied with windows x64 pro

umb, lots of people here just seem like complete idiots who make everyone think they are the master computer noob by using annoying computer terms n stuff.

anywho, my experiance with xp64 on an intel system (Seem to be the only one?) first of it all it really ticked me off, take over an hour to startup, but after a while of messign around it turned out my cd rw was causing hte trouble, unplugged it and since then its been the fasted thing i've run, games work far better in xp64 i find since i can't afford a top of the range graphics card i have the budget? (ish) x800gt which seems to handle games a lot better in x64, i bought a cheap £11 wireless card to replace my stupid netgear one, this one is has a considerably better connection in 32 and 64 xp and has cheaper, (why is netgear so overpriced anyway?)

all in all, once you've got your drivers, and use a free antivirus such as avast, it seems much better. only snag for me cfosspeed doesn't work in it :(

Well, I just bought my new computer parts off newegg.com: AMD Athlon64 3200+, gig of corsair 3200 DDR, 300gig maxtor pata HD, MSI MB with nvidia 4, a nice antec 500w PSU, and a ginormous heatsink (i prolly dont need it).

Problems beganmy situation when my computer was telling me that my processor was malfunctioning, but after taking the heatsink off, wiping that artic silver shite off, and paying 5 bucks for another weenie assed tube, I got it working.

XP Pro x64 installed perfectly fine. Looked just like the XP-32 installation, cept everything said x64 on it.

Got x64 up and running, and all my programs installed perfectly fine, altho there seemed to be a slight problem. The drivers for the PCI slots on my motherboard werent installed, so i shoved in the CD that came with the MB, autorun popped up, and what happened? Freakin error saying the OS isn't supported. How gay?!

So, since my dad has crappy dial up and my internal modem was prolly purchased for a 98 machine, i have to wait till i get to my mom's in a week to DL updates and get everything working hunky dory.

However, after searching around on different known wireless manufacturer sites, and numerous fateful emails to customer support, I have not found a single company that has 64bit drivers for a wireless card. If anyone knows of one, please let me in on the secret. I don't really feel like having a 50 foot cable running through my house -.-

Most of preceeding comments sounds like an AA meeting. Neverless:System=A-openAK86-L,Amd64@2000,Ati AIW 9800,1GB 3200 DDR,80GBIDE samsumg(system Drive),200GB SATA Seagate, very old floppy,Liteon dvd r/rw.
Just for fun, I slapped an old 80 GB IDE Samsung HD in my perfectly healthy and fully updated WinXP Home OS inspired system and with the previously downloaded and burned WinXP Pro x64 eval software, proceeded to install as if I knew what I was doing. I only recall one time finding myself commenting, "How in the world would anyone without previous MS combat experience make this happen?" Now, perhaps due to an aging cortex, it seems that this was the least painfull installation of all times. I still remember the 32 disketts of win95. I admit that I had also previously downloaded Via x64 SATA driver and only had to direct windows to the right folder. I like it, a lot. Although Panda AV, Sonic Studio burning software and a couple of other utilities like Tuneup 2006 no longer work even though I just bought them last month, it was worth it. It's faster and absolutely stable. The drivers and utility updates will come soon and this now really great OS will only get better. I still remember the 3.1, 95, 98, Mil, and XP startups.

re: Windows XP x64
I'm doing fine with XP Pro X64 so far, but I have encountered one amusement that I thought I'd describe in case others run into the same problem.

I bought my ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 motherboard from New Egg in a cheaper, so-called OEM version (i.e., the board alone, without cables, manual or driver CD ROM), so I had to rely upon the XP Pro X64 distribution to provide drivers. This worked well enough for many devices, including the MSI GeForce 5600 AGP 8X card I'd brought along from my previous computer, but THERE WAS NO DRIVER FOR THE motherboard's built-in ETHERNET PORT. So I was stranded, metaphorically deserted at the altar, because I was unable to get my new machine to participate in my LAN here at home or to reach out for drivers and updates over the Web.

What to do? Well, I used another computer to browse for X64 drivers on the ASRock Web site. I downloaded the LAN driver, unpacked it, then re-packed it using WinZip pointed at a floppy disk. (Old timers may recall that this was how we created backup sets spanning several floppies before the advent of MS-backup and CD/DVD writers.) I sneaker-netted this to my new system, unpacked the driver using XP Pro X64's built in .zip cabability, crossed my fingers and double-clicked the .exe driver package. It worked like a charm. This gave my new system access to Windows Update, etc.

The next phase is loading up antivirus software. Too bad that Grisoft's Free AVG does not work, since I've found it a pleasure to use with 32-bit XP Pro. On various sites, I've found two possible freeware candidates, Nod32-x64 and avast! 4. I've noted conflicting reports about compatibility, freezeups etc. for these two. Before I do the deed and try installing one or the other of them, (1) are there other choices I ought to investigate, and (2) what's the best choice at this time?

Thanks a bunch!

Andy

I just installed Windows XP x64 and it's giving me more crap that I ever imagined. A friend recommended that I go ahead and buy it and, lo and behold, I bought it. He had no problems, but I had "Beginning dump of physical Memory" errors VERY often. And this is from 1 day's use. Anybody want to buy it off me?

I installed the x64 drivers provided by Gigabyte on the CD I got when I bought the Motherboard. That didn't work. Now I can't even see the network that I'm connected to (I'm the host and the other computers connect through me :-P ). I'm downloading the Nvidia drivers as I write this. I'll let you guys know how it goes (if I still remember this site - I just googled it).

you can make the belkin52 work on a 64bit syston all you have to do is install the lateest drivers and tell it what game your going to use in the loadout maniger then open the profile editor and tell it what profile to use close the loadout maniger but just minimise the profile editor if its set up with your faviourite profile like codn52 the one i use then start up your game. the contreoller will work just like it used to. its a workaround untill belkin dose a 64bit driver if they ever do.BTW alcohol 120 just put out a 64bit version with a working virtuall drive thats the only thing that's kept me from doing the 64bit OS. And there are bittorrent downloads for 64bit-XP-pro-Corp that work just fine.===BA===

Nostromo
The Nostromo speed pad has a default mapping.

If you plug it in with no drivers loaded, it autoconfigures to emulate the following keys: TAB, Q, W, E, R / CAPS, A, S, D, F / SHIFT, Z, X, C, thumb = space, red button = ALT, D-pad are arrow keys, scroll wheel acts like a mouse scroll wheel with mouse button 3.

It's right there on page 8 of the manual.

Whether Windows XP x64 will let you use the device as a generic HID is a different matter.

re: Windows XP x64
So, I just got a new system (AMD 4400+ dual core), and I loaded a trial version of Win XP x64 that I downloaded from Microsoft. I had heard some programs would not work, and that was true. Logitech apparently has no drivers for x64, so there went my favorite mouse. I still use Netscape 4.79 for mail because it is the least cluttered, simplest mail program in the history of mail programs, but that's done, too. x64 won't install it. So I had to upgrade to a new mail program and cannot get any of my old mail data to convert.

Oh, and for some damn reason I cannot get my home network to work. My x64 computer can see my other 32 bit XP computer, but it won't let me access anything on it.

So that's the bad news. But really, not so bad. Oh, and EZ Armor won't work. But there are other virus programs I'm sure I can get.

Good news? Well, it's faster than a bitch. Jeez, guys, this thing is damn fast. I'm going to try 32bit XP and see what the comparison is, but this mother moves. Programs open in a snap. Many programs can be run together. Internet speeds are lightening quick.

No installation problems. No hang ups. Just some software won't work, but I knew that going in. Just didn't know which software it would be. And my network won't work. I sure miss Netbui, but I guess they dumped it for a reason. All in all, I'd say x64 is not a bad deal. It works great with the programs that work with it, but it will cost you some of your older faves that won't work on the x64 platform.

re: Windows XP x64
You're all so funny, Windows XP is alright but I'm also going insane over the need to use a floppy drive for the SATA drivers. This is nuts!! I had the original OEM disc that was sent when I bought my system, but I've taken to burning bootable copies with all my software on them. Well, instead of putting Nero to "No Emulation" I accidently placed it on "DOS Emulation" hahaha. What a joke now... it isn't bootable and I'm stuck because I threw that stupid OEM disc away for having scratches.

Anyways my plan is to install the trial of XP x64 then burn the boot sector the right way and reformatt, however if it's cool I might wanna buy it. I am hoping that:

1. I can use a USB floppy drive to tell windows where the SATA drivers are.

2. I can use a USB Flash Drive to tell windows where the SATA drivers are.

If either of these work then I'm saved, I won't need to waste time installing a damn floppy drive internally, what a joke!

As far as your network goes i had the same problem as well, make sure they are all set to allow file sharing and also check your firewall to allow them to communicate together, check permission also. What does it do or say when u try to connect? May need to run a network setup on both/all of the computers. For me it was confusing until i just got in there to figure it out on my own. I usually try to figure everything out first on my own. I have 3 computers on my home network as of now. 1 is a wireless laptop other is my sons which is also a 3rd backup computer for files. My antivirus is norton Corporate edition 10. Wish i could afford the x2 core chips, would love to see benchmarks on performance. My logitec mouse works perfectly, not sure what you are using. As far as usb bootup goes i have no idea if it will detect it 1st or not for your sata drivers.I must be old school....lol...never had a computer without a floppy drive.I know they come that way anymore. Worked on a buddies that had mal-ware all over it....he didnt have a floppy either...but thank god i didnt need it right.
I'm sure i didnt help anyone out with this but oh well, i dont know much anyway!!gl all

So I built a kick-ass, water-cooled system with a Pentium Extreme Edition and 1 GB of DDR2. The mobo is an Intel 755XBK or something like that. Anyways, I installed x64 bit XP with no problems; however, I did have some trouble with drivers. I managed to hunt down the drivers for everything and used randomly chosen drivers to get my printers to work. The only problems I'm having now are that some of my games don't work and I have a 5-10 second response delay when I click on things at times (but not all the time), even when the CPU is bored to tears. I'm going back to XP 32-bit. This sucks.

The games that you are trying to install, they probably have a 16 bit installer but are a 32 bit program? Yea that sucks...im sure there is a way around i just dont know what it is...i think i had that happen on me too. There are a lot of resources out there that may help, sorry i cant help ya.

Certified 64-bit support for BT8x8 chips, now. Leadtek, I'm lookin' at you.
Those homebrew Conexant drivers have such small penis.
Can I say Penis?
Yes.

Hey, I am running Windows pro X64 for about 200Days (reinstalled it) and it works fine whit me! i have one of the slowest 64bit - procs -> AMD Sempron 3000+ S745 (1.8GHZ 256 Cash 200FSB 1600 HT) It runs PERFECT! Fast, Stable. the only thing is i cant find a Webcam driver... (there are no webcam develepers creating X64 Drivers) But i dont care (Wabkam isnt importent to me, its funny sometimes but not usefull)

Gaming is Great on X64! Source has released a 64bit version of its engine! (HL2 CSS DoD-S)

WoW is running great to!

Crashes often, especially with 32-bits applications. No 32-bits application can connect to the internet. General lack of drivers. This system is not ready for home use yet. Can't wait to see the Vista fiasco.

re: Windows XP x64
Well i have had my problems with X64 as well but i am currently running it. The aspi drivers suck. Using alcohol 120% is impossible. Burning cd's makes your computer lagg. and well there are thousands more i could put in, One of the greatest things about the X64 OS is that you are able to run 64 bit applacations. Other than that its best to stay away from it till Vista comes out. They will release tons of 64 bit drivers. allot of company's are shying away from releasing betasdue to the problems that can happen. they also know that they would rather have Microsoft test them them selfs or there company, Also if you want to use Virtual PC Good luck. AVG antivirus is the only antivirus as of now tat works. Firewalls are a issue as well. To all of you that have the X64 OS be patient.

For those of you who have not found the n52 drivers for x64 yet, here's a link:

http://files.filefront.com/Nostromo_x64msi/;4614899;;/fileinfo.html

They work fine for me. Also, the other sticking point for me was no webcam had drivers that would work. I just found the Micro$haft LifeCam NX-6000 comes with x64 drivers that work with Windows Live Messenger (but not Skype).
