SQL Server Upgrade Technical Reference Guide

So, you are considering upgrading to SQL Server 200x from a previous version. What are some of the key issues that you need to consider, or at least be made aware of, prior to upgrading?

Fortunately the heavy lifting of answering that question has already been done for you. It's available to you in the form of an Upgrade Technical Reference Guide. There's one available for upgrading to SQL Server 2008 and one for SQL Server 2005.

Of course, you'll still need to consider the information provided in these documents in light of your specific databases and servers, but at least these will provide a good jump start on the process.

Cheers!

Thanks Joe, these are good documents for dba library.
Just to let people know. These docs are not just marketing brochures about new features in new version etc. These are comprehensive guides each 500 pages describing all the methods and details of migration.

You're absolutely right. And thanks for mentioning that here.

As an aside, I actually wrote a very small chapter in each of these documents, the upgrading Notification Services chapter.

Cheers!

he SQL Server 2005 database engine implements a highly scalable and available service for data storage, processing, and security to meet the requirements of the most demanding data systems.SQL Server Reporting Services is a new server-based reporting platform that you can use to create and manage tabular, matrix, graphical, and free-form reports that contain data from relational and multidimensional data sources.

This should be (in my opinion) the defacto standard of how pm software should behave - tons of features with svn, bazzar, cvs and git integration, mailhandler like create a ticker by mail, wiki per project and automatic gannt creation.
The only downfall of this amazing piece of software is that it's written in ruby and thus less intuitive to install.
Another contender in the field will probably be openatrium, I predict that a code repository plugin (browser, diffs etc..) will appear between 6-12 monthes.

Great article, Matt. It's really nice to get to peek at your best practices all in one place. Looking forward to Part 2. Quilted's is now officially on the Drush bandwagon and loving it.

Great article, can't wait for part 2. If you only use Drush for module downloads and updates it is worth investing the time in learning the CLI, huge time saver.

You should invest some of your time in order to be better acquainted with the Command Line Interface (CLI). I installed VMWare Player (Free) and downloaded a linux appliance (I choose Cent OS) so I can have on my windows computer a running linux where I do all my CLI stuff, even offline.
