Bringing Business Sense to the IT World…

PASS 2004: D-2

Technically, it's 1:30 AM on Tuesday, but for me it's still 10:30 PM Monday night.  After leaving Seattle at 1:30 PM local time, I flew to Kansas City with a screaming child sitting behind me.  Fortunately he got off the plane in KC and Graz and RocketScientist got on.  From there we flew to Orlando, Florida, arriving around 11:30 PM local time.  We had a town car waiting for us to bring us to the Gaylord Palms Resort, the location of the 2004 PASS Community Summit.  We got checked in to our rooms and then went in search of food.  Since it was after midnight local time, there weren't many options.  We had sandwiches at the 24-hour coffee shop which were okay.  A short while later we called it a night, and here I am.

Right now, I am typing this on the in-room computer that is all setup and ready to use.  It's a pretty cool system they have setup.  It gives you access to a proprietary application that gives you all the hotel info (and believe me, there is a lot of it for this place which spans 4.5 acres) including restaurants, maps, and meeting info.  Yes, it has programmed into it the general schedule and locations of my convention events.  I thought that was pretty impressive.  And, as you can tell, there is the option to surf the web.  Unfortunately, it restricts you to only one window open at a time, and I'm used to running multiple browser windows.  And of course there are all the other applications I have loaded on my laptop that are not here.  So, pretty soon I will be switching over to my laptop computer, which I can plug in to the broadband network cable and get online at no extra cost.

Hurricane Jeanne came through here (actually south of Orlando) over the weekend and the airport was closed until today.  Because of that, all pre-conference activities scheduled for today were cancelled.  Orlando looks like it made it through okay.  I was told that Disney World was open today, so it couldn't have been too disastrous.  There are a couple of palm trees here on the property that were looking a bit worse for the wear, but the buildings all seem fine.  Other parts of Florida did get slammed really hard.

It's good to be here.  I am not attending any pre-conference seminars tomorrow, so I'll have a chance to explore the property more.  Unfortunately, I also have to wrap up some work for a client, so tomorrow will be a bit of a work day.  It was great to meet up with Graz and Chris already, and looking forward to re-establishing some other PASS contacts.  We tried to reach Denise by phone to join us for a late dinner, but got no answer.  I'm sure we'll see her at the reception tomorrow night if not some time before.

Stay tuned for further updates as the story progresses here in Orlando.  For now, this is Ajarn Mark signing off!
